I lived on the road for 10 years as a tree planter. I know how to sleep in a small Dodge Colt hatchback diagonally comfortably…includes a 3ft by 14inch plank to keep back and head straight. The view of the sky is great and air is always fresh. The radio is also always a arms length away. I finally bought a Scamp trailer which is a mansion of comfort and ease in comparison.

When I first heard about the Tesla, and it’s watermelon-sized engine and trunk full of laptop batteries, my first thought was: How do I put that engine in a Vanagon?

i’ve lived in my van for 5years. it’s a ford f35 customized in canada with a tall top so i can stand inside. it’s 17ft, had a toilet, bed, sink, stove, furnace, microwave. once you get on the road, as long as your comfortable you won’t want to go back. i think a toilet is important. i don’t use the microwave ever and you could do without a sink. a propane stove is a must. good luck, it’s very liberating and i don’t want to go back.

Electric vehicles are great for commuters in town. Long haul, they’re worthless. We don’t have batteries that can store enough juice to go far. Unless you talk about the above-mentioned Tesla Motors, which uses about $25,000 worth of lithium-ion batteries and costs over $100,000 to start.

Depending on how long you want to wait, I’ve heard that Tesla motors is planning a larger vehicle. The roadster they have now gets roughly 200 miles to the charge, and takes as little as 3.5 hours to charge. The specs on this car are amazing… 0-60 in about 4 seconds, top speed over 130mph. I would imagine that when they get around to designing a van, they’ll get much better range in exchange for some of the acceleration.

Listen. If you want to do it hard core. Walk. Want to
be earth friendly. Walk. A prius is actually more harmfull to the enviroment i.e. the production of one vechical itself is comparison of 5 chevy z71 or ford 150 trucks with the addition of the battery acid in the vechical is extremely harmfull to the enviroment. meaning when the cars has it life and going to the dumpster. If you want to practice what you preach and want to get around the US and see things. Walk. Go in the mountains and eat some wild berries and go into a cave mand have a relfection on what yall are doing and the best thing both of yall can do is WALK. WALK. Like in forrest Gump “I WAS RUNNING” do that but walk because running sucks. Or better yet get on bikes. Save your money for hotels or something, Get rid of you VW bus. Meaning sell SELL SELL!. Both of you will be wasting money on a PRIUS and you think oh look at me i bought a prius i am so specail. If you are so enviromental consious in sound WALK or rid a BIKE. It simple mathmatics. Want some where to ride bikes where it will be cool in the summer would idealy be Vermount. Its beautiful there. And on your down for summer go to hot springs arkansas. Just travel the Appaclian trail. but by bike. or walk. That’s what yall need to do and eat wild berries on the way.

That’s a cool little van, Steve. Although I’m sure the cops would be after us 24/7 in that thing and then ticket us for having the steering wheel on the wrong side.
