Who?
What?
Living in a van
And driving it all across the country
Where?
Down by the River
Many rivers, actually. And lakes and mountains and ice cream stands.
Why?
To get away, see America, find the best city to live in, meet cool people, and blog about it all.
For a primer see this post. We’ll be updating this page soon…

Hey Markus and Angela,
I’m the editor over at Creative Loafing in Sarasota. Would love to talk to you guys about the trip. Let’s get in touch — max@cln.com.
Thanks.

I live in Sacramento, CA, and I think you guys should come to the American/Sacramento river here. There are many, many places to stay/camp/whatever. You could also spend awhile actually getting here, it’s about on the opposite side of America. Perhaps you could spend a month at every river you come across?

I think, for what its worth, that you should consider a used sprinter van (real tall vans) because of the size advantages. http://images.cars.com/main/DMI/176714/700420.jpg
Good luck anyhow.

I agree with the sprinter suggestion, but VWs are cool too. For used VW vans of every vintage check out the classifieds at http://www.thesamba.com
Good luck with your adventures!

If you’re in Philly, drop me a line!
Best of luck!

Another vote for the used Sprinter idea. They are notoriously reliable and get 25 mpg with the diesel engine.
Best of luck!

Folks have a look at some good friends of mines site who are about to get into their ‘58 VW bus/van and travel down to S.America.

In 2004 I went off the net totally and spent 8 months driving around the US in a Honda Van (where I usually slept) and took buses around Mexico, talking to people not using the Internet. Access to the net is highly over rated by many of us online. I got about 26 mpg which is quite a bit better than the Vanagon from VW, but there are probably better options three years later.
I also carried an inflatable kayak and did some cooking from the tailgate. A friend posted some of my tales from the road: http://tingilinde.typepad.com/unconnected/
They were mailed to him on an SD card.
Contact me if you have any questions.

I’m curious about how you are planing on connecting to the web while on the road? Coffee shops? Various free Wi-Fi connections? Or will you have some kind of “take it anywhere in the world and connect to the Internet” type of connection? I hope the last! It would be cool to see live “down by the river” webcam shots or something!

Verizon EVDO has a pretty good connection most places and I can patch right through my phone with it. Otherwise wifi and coffee shops

Excellent adventure! Are you going all the way to the east coast?
September 17th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Ya – the plan is to go up the East coast, then head West.

have you considered setting up a twitter account on which you catalog the notable, yet not quite bloggable, events throughout your travels?

Markus & Angela,
If you guys include Virginia on your route, stop by Roanoke! I’ll get you hooked up with a place to stay and some food!
And maybe a good Farley skit or two…
